GPNJ Denounces the Israeli Occupation Forces’ Plan to Wage a Ground Invasion in Rafah

The Green Party of New Jersey (GPNJ) denounces in the strongest possible terms, the Israeli Occupation Forces’ (IOF) plan to wage a ground invasion in Rafah, in Gaza, Occupied Palestine.

GPNJ’s opposition only grows stronger with the news that for the 3rd time since October 7, 2023, the United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council Ceasefire Resolution.  The Green Party of New Jersey calls for a permanent ceasefire, effective immediately.

“The constant aerial bombardment of Rafah for the past week or more is killing many Gazan civilians, both long term residents and the more than 1 million Gazans who have been forced by Israel,  to seek refuge in Rafah”, said Madelyn Hoffman, international policy advisor to the Khalil for Senate campaign, and GPNJ’s U.S. Senate candidate against Robert Menendez in 2018. “This, after being ordered to flee from Northern Gaza, then to Khan Younis, and now to Rafah. There is no place left for Gazans to go, let alone a safe place. This is textbook ethnic cleansing and genocide”, continued Hoffman.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled on January 26th, 2024 that plausible grounds exist for a genocide being committed by Israel against Palestinians, in its ruling on the case brought by South Africa against Israel.  The ruling was decided under Article II of the Genocide Convention of 1948 agreed to by Israel, the United States, South Africa and 150 more nations. The ICJ ordered Israel to stop the killing and to allow more humanitarian aid to get into Gaza. Unfortunately, Israel and its main ally, the United States,  ignored those interim provisions and did the exact opposite. The United States cut funding to UNRWA based on unproven allegations, Israel continues bombing Gaza, and Israeli citizens have organized a human blockade, preventing aid trucks from entering Gaza with food and medical provisions.

South Africa appealed to the World Court on February 13th, hoping for immediate action to prevent further slaughter. While the ICJ responded by saying that Israel must follow the recommendations made on the 26th of January, no new provisions were mandated regarding an expected ground invasion into Rafah. This is despite many in the world acknowledging that a ground invasion of Rafah would create an even greater humanitarian catastrophe

The Green Party is the only political party in the United States calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire. GPNJ’s candidate for U.S. Senate, Christina Khalil, has spoken out consistently for a ceasefire and against the genocidal actions of the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF). Neither Andy Kim, nor Tammy Murphy, the only 2 United States Senate candidates from those competing in the Democratic Party primaries and given an opportunity to debate, have done so. Senator Menendez has called for wiping Hamas off the face of the earth and Tammy Murphy’s husband, Governor Phil Murphy, just said “Let’s remember that Hamas started this war,” – a statement that is misleading at best and at worst, totally incorrect.

Said Green Party of NJ candidate for U.S. Senate, Christina Khalil, “It’s time to support the only ethical political party in NJ. We take no money from AIPAC or other pro-Israel lobby organizations, so we can speak our minds on these very important matters of life and death.”
