Statement on Palestine, Israel, and BDS in response to S1923
East Windsor, NJ -- US policy regarding Israel and Palestine must be revised to prioritize international law, peace, and human rights for all people. Citizens of this country should insist that our government stop aiding and abetting the rights violations and war crimes of our allies. This includes the Israeli government and the rulers of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Egypt.
There is a campaign supported by thousands of civil society peace activists and organizations intended to influence the policies of the Israeli government. Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) is one among many nonviolent actions advocated by my campaign. It is appalling to hear that the State of New Jersey is considering legislation to discriminate against those who employ this legitimate tactic. BDS is not intended to harm the Israeli population. To the contrary, that population would benefit greatly from implementation of policies that can lead to the end of the occupation of the West Bank and an end to systematic human rights abuses.
This is similar to how the American people would benefit from an overhaul of the foreign policy of the US government -- toward demilitarization and the fostering of international justice. In regard to the latter, my campaign calls for the establishment of a Palestine and Israel Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Such could be the vehicle for shifting from an era of US support of human rights and international law violations to one based on justice and truth -- bringing all parties together as equals to seek workable solutions. A dedicated commitment to justice will further the security of all parties . . . Palestinians, Israelis, people in the Mideast generally . . . and the population of our own country as well.
