Earth Day: Dangerous Gas Compressor Coming to NJ!

The Essex/Passaic Green Party is calling on individuals and other organizations to join us canvassing in Roseland and East Hanover the weekend right before Earth Day, April 20 and 21st. This is very appropriate because, unfortunately, work to build a new, 25,000 horsepower, natural gas compressor station in that area began a little over a week ago.

Please be in touch if you can join with us on one of these days. We’ll be canvassing from 11 am to 3 pm both days. If you can’t do four hours but can do a couple, that’ll be much appreciated.

Do you know about gas compressor stations? I’ve been learning about them myself over the last month, and they’re not a good thing:

-They emit dangerous toxins into the air: volatile organic compounds (voc’s), nitrogen oxide, formaldehyde and methane.

-They blow up sometimes. Just last week, in Logan County, Oklahoma a compressor station owned by DCP Midstream did just that, leading to the evacuation of people from nearby homes. And a little over a year ago, in Bradford County , Pa. , there was an explosion and fire at a compressor station owned by Williams Partners LP, the same company that is building the one in Roseland/East Hanover.

-A Williams Partners subsidiary, the Transcontinental Gas Pipeline Co. LLC, was fined $23,800 in 2011 and $50,000 in 2012 by the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) for lax management of compressor stations and pipelines in Texas , Louisiana and Staten Island .

-And this compressor station is a key component of the Williams Northeast Supply Link, or Transco, one of four new pipelines being built across New Jersey to carry fracked gas to northeast markets and, eventually, to overseas markets, if the gas industry gets its way.

  • ALERT: GAS COMPRESSOR STATION IN ESSEX COUNTY !

    Dear Friends,

The canvassing April 20-21 will be done as part of the growing national movement against fracking and for a truly clean and safe renewable energy future.

Please help us provide our fellow citizens in Roseland and East Hanover with information and the support that will help them take community action to protect their rights and their homes.
