Statement in support of Free Speech, BDS, and opposition to S1923 and A925

Trenton, NJ -- My campaign definitely endorses boycott, divestment and sanction as a peaceful means of protesting the apartheid state of Israel. The ACLU and Codepink among others support BDS as a form of free speech and nonviolent means of promoting peace.

The state of Israel is supported financially and militarily by the United States. We as a country tacitly support the violence and discrimination that is occurring against the Palestinian people in violation of international law. Israel is a valuable ally and friend but their cutthroat tactics cannot be overlooked. The US and Israel are preeminent military and economic powers who clearly have the power to end this violence.

The Palestinians are clearly oppressed in a variety of ways by any objective measure. To pretend they are a realistic threat to Israel is implausible. The onus should  be on the US and Israel to promote a peaceful workable solution to the conflict rather than further oppress and incrementally genocide these people through military and economic means. Boycott and divestment worked in South Africa as Bishop Tutu recognized and it is beginning to have an effect now against Israel.

The moves by state legislatures to push these measures against BDS are wrong on a variety of levels and smack of McCarthyism as many have said. Supporting legal action against these measures are unequivocally necessary. At least make these referendums on the upcoming ballot so the public can have a say.

As the Green Party, we must stand for human rights and dignity. We as a nation have lost the moral authority to tell others what to do but we should not sanction this further structural socioeconomic violence against an oppressed people.
