This will be on C-SPAN 1, and it should garner national attention. Please spread the word! -------------------------------------- SUCCESSFUL PRESIDENTIAL PETITION DRIVE Congratulations and thanks to all who participated in the successful petition drive to get our McKinney / Clemente national ticket on the ballot in New Jersey. Things got a little dramatic going into the last weekend of the petition drive! Not wanting to wait until the very last day (Monday, July 28), we submitted as many booklets as we had in-hand on Friday, July 25. But our total number of signatures at that point was only a little over 700. A minimum of 800 are required, and somewhere between 1,000-1,500 is recommended to avoid facing a challenge to the petition. So we had to motivate an all-out effort over the weekend of July 26-27. Our members (and some key helpers from the Peoples Organization for Progress) worked hard and came through with over 600 additional signatures by July 28, so our final total of 1,327 signatures gave us a comfortable margin ... and assured that New Jersey voters will have a chance to cast a vote for the Green Party's historic ticket, the first headed up by two women of color. Now our task turns to GOTV (Get Out The Vote) for McKinney/Clemente and all of our own GPNJ candidates! --------------------------------------- INVITATION TO A GREEN SUMMER PICNIC We can celebrate our successful petition drive at a Green Party Summer Picnic. Date: Saturday, August 23 - 3:00 to 7:00pm. Location: 58 Brooktree Road, East Windsor 08520. It's a pot-luck - bring something good to share. Music will be provided by Tom Neilson ("The Bard Insurgent" - see: www.tomneilsonmusic.com). All GPNJ candidates are encouraged to come, report on your campaigns, and do a fundraising pitch if you're so inclined. Otherwise, let's relax and enjoy each other's company prior to the beginning of the fall campaign season. --------------------------------------- - HIP-HOP'S ALL OUT FOR MCKINNEY/CLEMENTE! Is the Green Party running the first ever Hip-Hop ticket? The McKinney/Clemente presidential campaign continues to garner endorsements from many leaders in the hip-hop community. Public Enemy's legendary Professor Griff supports the ticket, as does M1 from Dead Prez; La Bruja; NY OIL; and most recently, RAS (Riders Against the Storm). Demand Life! Demand Joy! Demand the Funk!" Four different groups will converge at Union Station and then hip-hop onto the 16th Street mall that runs the length of downtown near most of the major hotels: * The Power to the People Convergence, led by Cynthia McKinney and Green Party supporters, will leave from Curtis Park; * The Youth Convergence, led by Tent State and joined by Ralph Nader, will leave from Skate Park; * The Women's Convergence, led by CODEPINK, will assemble at Union Station; * The Veterans' Convergence, led by Iraq Veterans Against the War and Veterans for Peace, will leave from the MEPS Center. The 16th Street mall will be full of delegates Sunday afternoon. After cruising the mall, the dancers/ demonstrators will move to Tent State's site in Cuernavaca Park, near downtown, where bands and speakers will be given a stage. Logistics are in favor of Funk the War confronting individual Democrats and maybe even drawing some to the park. Cynthia McKinney will be giving a class at Tent State. Both she and Rosa Clemente will be speaking at a variety of events all during the week. ------------------------------------------ HERE'S A MCKINNEY/CLEMENTE POSTER FOR COLLEGE CAMPUSES The following is forwarded from Midge Potts of the Progressive Party of Missouri (the GPUS affiliate in Missouri): All over the country, college students will soon be getting back to campus. Most of those campuses have dozens of public bulletin boards and right now they won't be overburdened with flyers. So we basically have free advertising space waiting for us to post our messages on them. If we could all hang some posters on bulletin boards at a nearby university campus, we will reach a lot of young voters who may not otherwise hear about Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente. But we have to act now! I've made a poster that I am going to hang at Missouri State University. Feel free to download it and hang it up at a college campus near you: www.geocities.com/potts4congress/McKinney_campus_poster.jpg ------------------------------------------ CHECK OUT ED FANNING'S CAMPAIGN BROCHURE Ed Fanning has designed a beautiful and informative brochure to promote his candidacy in the 5th CD Congressional race. "Both the McCain and Obama energy plans privilege corporate profits over the urgent need to transform our nation's energy policies. Both Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama are seeking ways to preserve corporate profits at a time when the future of our planet is at stake," said John M. Wages, Jr., Green candidate for the US House in Mississippi, District 1 (www.VoteJohnWages.com). "Barack Obama's support for nuclear power and ethanol and his recent turnaround on offshore drilling prove that he, like John McCain, will not challenge the power and profits of the energy industry. We need the kind of national leadership on energy and the global warming threat that's represented by our presidential and congressional Green candidates." Exelon, a nuclear power company, is among Barack Obama's top corporate donors. Oil industry contributions to Democrats and Republicans in 2008 are already soaring, while the percentage gap between contributions to the two parties' candidates, though consistently higher for Republicans, has begun to diminish (Source: www.opensecrets.org/industries/indus.php?ind=E01). Greens said that two factors are behind the demand for drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Reserve (ANWR) and in offshore areas, purportedly to reduce dependence on foreign oil: (1) The oil companies are manipulating prices to create fear among Americans to win support for drilling in these areas. In fact, Canada increased its exports to the US by almost 100 million barrels between 2005 and 2007, thanks to an oil boom in Alberta's oil sands, and oil companies have posted record profits recently. Naomi Klein has written that "drilling in ANWR would have little discernible impact on actual global oil supplies, as its advocates well know. The argument that it could nonetheless bring down oil prices is based not on hard economics but on market psychoanalysis: drilling would 'send a message' to the oil traders that more oil is on the way, which would cause them to start betting down the price." (The Nation, July 21, 2008) (2) Popular fears over gas prices have given the oil industry greater leverage over measures to curb global warming at a time when fossil fuel consumption must be drastically reduced. Furthermore, Exxon Mobil, Texaco, BP, and other companies are using their increased leverage during the gas price panic to win oil production contracts in Iraq, which will prolong the US occupation indefinitely. Sen. Obama, while promising a reduction of US troops in Iraq, would leave a residual occupation force to protect "American interests," which means US control over Iraqi oil resources. The Green Party has strongly opposed ANWR and off-shore drilling and trading of carbon caps, and favors bans on new coal fired-power plants, new nuclear power plants (as well as early retirement of current nuclear reactors), and all mountaintop coal removal. The party endorses a reduction by 90% of mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants by 2012, targeted carbon taxes, investment in renewable noncarbon-based energy technology, and reduction of CO2 and SO2 emissions by 80% by 2020. These and other policies are listed in a recommendation for environmental action for a Green President's first 100 days in office: www.gp.org/press/pr-national.php?ID=58 "America's first energy priorities must be conservation and efficiency. The Green Party has an effective plan to reorganize the economy, create millions of new jobs in conversion to safe clean energy, conservation, and expansion of public transportation to replace car traffic," said Rosa Clemente, nominated by the Green Party as Cynthia McKinney's running mate for Vice President of the United States (www.rosaclemente.com). "Such an effort should be comparable to America's concerted and internationally cooperative effort to defeat the Axis powers during World War II. But this time we'd be uniting for peace, since global warming threatens the security of the entire world in the coming decades." "Without such an effort, the disaster we witnessed in New Orleans during and after Katrina will take place on a global scale. Billions of people will see their homes, livelihoods, health, and lives threatened, while corporate interests exploit the devastation for more money and power," added Ms. Clemente. Organizing was initiated by a joint effort of New York and New Jersey Greens. Here is their release: - - - - - - - - - - - - - People Against Oiligarchy, a broad-based coalition which has recently formed to oppose the oil barons who have hijacked our democracy, is organizing a November demonstration in New York City to protest extortionate gasoline prices and runaway oil company profiteering. The coalition has issued an open invitation to legendary recording artist and outspoken black-power leader, Professor Griff of the hip-hop group Public Enemy, to appear as a featured speaker at the rally. Other speakers who are being invited include Stanley Aronowitz, the country's most prominent labor sociologist, who was the Green Party's 2002 New York State gubernatorial candidate, and film celebrity and activist, Susan Sarandon. People Against Oiligarchy is a regional coalition that brings together Greens from New Jersey and New York, youth organizers, activists from the peace and social justice movements, and representatives from environmental organizations, faith communities, and organized labor. The Bergen County Green Party initially issued the call for a mass rally to protest the oiligarchy's gasoline price gouging and oil and gas profiteering. The coalition draws the connection between Big Oil and militarism; the connection between Big Oil and Washington's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and possible war against Iran; and the connection between Big Oil and the catastrophic degradation of the earth's environment. "The military-industrial-Big-Oil complex has hijacked our government and our democracy," said Gary Novosielski, the chair of the Bergen County Green Party. "The power-hungry oiligarchs, in their insatiable quest for ever-higher oil profits, threaten the planet and its peoples with global warming, endless wars for empire leading to global environmental catastrophe." Arthur Rosen, who had originally proposed the idea of a joint New York / New Jersey anti-Big Oil rally, added, "We need an energy sector that works to meet the needs of our communities, and of ordinary working people, not an energy sector run to squeeze out unprecedented profits." New York City native and activist, Dr. Tony Gronowicz, the 2005 Green Party candidate for New York City mayor, elaborated, "We need to switch to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and wave, and to generate most of our power locally to get ourselves off the grid. We need to invest in mass transit, and in alternatives to the gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine. We need an economic planning model, and a regional planning model, where people can work and shop and enjoy recreation close to their homes instead of having to constantly use their cars for lengthy trips for routine activities. In short, we need to bust the oil cartels, take back our government and our democracy from the oiligarchy, and empower ordinary working people." According to Novosielski, the coalition's first mass demonstration protesting Big Oil is planned for mid- November in the Rockefeller Center area. This demonstration has already been endorsed by the Green Party of New Jersey (GPNJ), several NYC-based Green locals, by the Workers' International League (WIL), and is attracting the interest of several other environmental, progressive, and labor organizations whose endorsements are forthcoming. ------------------------------------------ GELLMAN COMMENTS ON PROPOSED NJ ENERGY MASTER PLAN Below is the statement made by Michael Gellman of the Camden County Greens at the July 17 public hearings on the Energy Master Plan for New Jersey: Governor Corzine, My name is Michael Gellman and I am a resident of Cherry Hill. I am a member of the Green Party and in 2007 ran as a candidate for NJ State Assembly in the 6th district. As a candidate, my platform focused on clean, safe and renewable energy production and increased energy efficiency for the state. This message resonated well with all of my constituents. I am here tonight to first commend you for your leadership in passing the Global Warming Response Act, and to continue taking aggressive action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by investing in clean, safe and renewable energy sources. Secondly, I would like to express my sentiments on the Energy Master Plan that your administration is proposing. I appreciate that the plan focuses on meeting our energy needs by investing in alternative energy sources such as wind and solar. However, the proposed plan still includes the option of building new conventional power plants, such as coal and nuclear plants. I do not feel that these are the best investments that NJ can make for a secure energy future to meet the energy needs of all our residents in a safe and affordable manner. Conventional power plants are the most expensive forms of producing energy, which rely on an expensive infrastructure to deliver energy to end- users, they are vulnerable to natural disasters, and they are a dirty and unsafe means of production. Alternatively, there are many more ways to both reduce demand and to increase investments into cleaner and safer energy production. The cheapest and easiest solution to meeting our energy needs is to reduce demand by increasing efficiency. There are several approaches to becoming more efficient, including strengthening the building code and promoting the use of energy efficient technology and appliances. Furthermore, energy efficiency can also be gained in the way electricity is produced. Conventional power plants are an extremely inefficient way to produce energy. A better alternative is co-generation, or the generation of electricity in small-scale plants that also capture heat for heating and cooling purposes. In addition to increasing efficiency, we should invest more resources into clean, renewable energy production such as wind and solar to produce electricity and geothermal for heating and cooling needs. I would like to refer you to two reports for additional information. The first is "Powering New Jersey's Future; a clean energy strategy for replacing the Oyster Creek and Salem Nuclear Power Plants " by Environment NJ (2007). Second, is "Forget Nuclear," by Amory Lovins, a cost- benefit analysis of several sources of energy including coal, nuclear, co-generation, wind and increased efficiency. Briefly, this analysis shows that nuclear is the most expensive form of energy production while the cheapest sources of energy are increased efficiency followed by co-generation and wind. The benefits of this analysis are measured in terms of CO2 emissions displaced per dollar spent. The analysis again shows end-use efficiency to have the biggest benefit, followed by co-generation and wind. Nuclear energy provides the smallest benefit. In a struggling economy where financial resources need to be managed more judiciously, NJ should invest in energy sources that provide the biggest impact for the lowest prices. In sum, NJ should invest in energy sources that are clean, safe and renewable and provide the greatest benefit to all our residents. Coal and nuclear power plants should not be included in the energy master plan. Thank you for this opportunity to testify and for considering these suggestions. Sources: 1. Toward that end a conference call meeting will be held on August 21. Please participate if you are interested in any of the above important functions: Thursday night, Aug. 21 - 8:30pm to 9:30pm Number to call: 712-432-1630 Code to enter: 166863# ------------------------------------------ TOWARD REORGANIZING THE MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE by Joe Fortunato I have long felt that we could do better if we had an organized membership drive. First, we have made many contacts over the years with people who have not become members. These people should be contacted again, especially in light of the presidential campaigns, and specifically asked to join and advised of the benefits of joining the Green community. (We need to deepen our own understanding of these benefits, first, imo, and perhaps even create some more). They should be asked to join by paying dues and should also be encouraged to register as Greens, especially now, without a Democratic primary on the horizon. This effort would have the added benefit of providing an opportunity for political struggle over the question of McKinney vs. Obama. Second, I would contact every County Coordinator and ask who among their contacts should be personally contacted to join. Then, the Membership committee should call and/or email those individuals. Third, I think Nick Mellis hit on something important when he pointed out the success he had petitioning among Black women for McKinney. Certainly there is a pride factor among Black (and Latina) women that a national political party has chosen a Black woman and a Latina as national candidates. Fourth, we should rebuild damaged or neglected alliances, such as with groups like Peace Action and POP. Individuals in these groups should be encouraged to join our party. Fifth, we should set county by county goals for membership and registration. Every county could designate someone to work with the MemCom to achieve these goals. Sixth, we should reach out to both McKinney supporters and Nader supporters who are not yet members and encourage them to join the organization which will carry on the struggle after November 4 - GPNJ! ------------------------------------------ NEWS FROM OUR LOCALS Bergen County The Bergen County Green Party is sponsoring a forum on Wednesday, September 10, at the Ethical Culture Society in Teaneck (on Larch Avenue). Confirmed speakers include: Norman Finkelstein, Larry Hamm and Issa Mikel. A Q&A period will follow the presentations. Endorsing organizations include: Bergen Peace and Justice Coalition, WESPAC Foundation, and Deir Yassin Remembered (list in formation). Refreshments will be served at 7:00pm and the forum will begin promptly at 7:30pm. - - - - - - - - Essex County The Essex Greens held a very successful fundraising party the last weekend in June in the very green backyard of members Ted Glick and Jane Califf. Fifty people attended and enjoyed the beautiful weather, the potluck food, music by Catherine Moon and Maria DeStefano, and political comedy by Dave Lippman. Several hundred dollars was raised. It was an all-around good event! - - - - - - - - Monmouth County Submitted by Rich Fuller Coordinator, Green Party of Monmouth County On August 10 I met with Keyport's community support group, "Cultural Harmony." This group had been created to foster programs, education and cooperation among minority groups in that town and its surrounding towns. Attendees included a veteran ESL teacher, an adjunct professor of Arabic, a handful of Latinos, representatives from both of the corporate parties as well as myself. I had sought and received permission to do a ten-minute presentation on the Green Party. Business items covered that day included cases of Latino workers who had not been paid for work done over several months despite frequent promises from a local contractor. This contractor eventually threatened to kill one of the laborers who was seeking his back pay. Such a terroristic threat was instrumental in providing the police with grounds to put him in jail. I explained to the group how the Green Party differed from the two corporate parties by briefly explaining each of the Ten Key Values in English. Because I knew that the group has been predominantly Latino, I distributed copies of the Ten KV in Spanish and English, side-by-side. I also distributed a green sheet that had the names and Web sites of Cynthia McKinney, Rosa Clemente, GPUS, and GPNJ plus my name, title and phone number. I also gave a one minute "commercial" on the benefits of listening to Amy Goodman and Democracy Now and included a reference to Pacifica and Link TV where DN is videocast twice daily. ------------------------------------------ JOB OPPORTUNITY WITH GPUS Job Title: Fundraising Assistant (several positions are open in all regions) The Green Party of the United States needs people to help with our fundraising program in selected regions.
