GREENS CHALLENGED INCUMBENTS IN NEW JERSEY CONGRESSIONAL, FREEHOLDER RACES

Green Party candidates contested four New Jersey Congressional and two Freeholder seats in 2010, offering a viable alternative to the politics of war and fear engendered by the governing duopolies in Washington and Trenton, according to Michael Spector, State Party Chair.

Steven Welzer, 60, of East Windsor ran in the 4th CD.  Steve holds a Masters Degree in Economics from Rutgers University.  A founding member of the Green Party of New Jersey in 1997, Steve ran for the same office in 2008 and for State Assembly in 2009.

Ed Fanning, from Dumont, ran in the 5th CD against incumbent Scott Garrett (R).  Ed ran for the same office in 2008.  He received an MBA from Fordham University's Graduate School of Business Administration, and is currently a Product Manager in the financial services industry.

Mark Heacock, 51, from Woodlynne, callenged Robert Andrews (D) in the 1st CD.  In 2005 and 2007, Mark ran for State Assembly, and in 2003 and 2004 for Woodlynne Borough Council.

Patricia Alessandrini, a Teaneck resident, holds degrees in Nursing and History and a Masters in International Studies.  She ran against Steve Rothman (D) in the 9th CD.  Previously, she ran for State Assembly in 2003, and for the Bergen County Freeholder in 2008.

In addition to Congress, the Green Party also fielded two New Jersey Freeholder candidates:  Margie MacWilliams in Gloucester County, her first time running; and Irwin Nack, retired Associate Professor of History at William Paterson University, and past president of the American Federation of Teachers Union Local 1796, in Bergen County.  He ran for the same position in 2003.

According to Spector, the Green Party offers rational alternatives and a progressive electoral platform under its ten key values:  ecological wisdom, social justice, grassroots democracy, nonviolence, decentralization, community-based economics, gender equality, respect for diversity, personal and global responsibility, and future focus/sustainability.

"We are supported by an established world-wide Green movement, including the Green Party of the United States.  Consider us an imperative for those seeking an alternative to government inertia and the unthinking, anti-democratic hysteria whipped up by the tea party adherents."
